Smothered Turkey Burgers are patties that are seared to perfection and then simmered in a delicious, thick brown sauce. These patties are great for any occasion and everyone will love them, including the kids.

I guess when this recipe comes to mind, you could think of the good old Hamburger Steaks, which was a staple in most households back in the day. The difference is really the meat used. I normally use ground turkey as a substitute for ground beef, as it is the healthier version of the two.

I remember the first time I made this dish for dinner, it was at the spur of the moment. I would only use my ground turkey to make the common stuff like meatballs and burgers, but this time I decided to try something new. These Smothered Turkey Burgers are very similar to the Smothered Chicken Thighs I made some while back. Feel free to check out that recipe above.

What’s In These Smothered Turkey Burgers

  • Ground Turkey- I used 75% lean and 15% fat ground turkey for this recipe, any type of turkey is good. You can also substitute ground beef if you like.
  • Onion- I used red onions for this recipe, but any other kind can be used. Red onions are more flavorful to me.
  • Bell Pepper- This is optional, but will add lots more flavor to your patties.
  • Chicken Stock- Water can be substituted, but of course chicken stock provides way more flavor.
  • Flour- Flour is important in this recipe as it acts as a thickening agent for your gravy.
  • Avocado Oil- To sauté your vegetables, any oil of your choice will work.
  • Breadcrumbs- Totally optional, I use as a binding agent to not have my patties fall apart.
  • Worcestershire Sauce- add lots of flavor and color to the gravy. I like my gravy a little darker.

Ingredients

  • 8 oz ground turkey
  • 2 tbsp All Purpose Seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Black Pepper
  • 1 tbsp Garlic Parmesan Seasoning
  • 1 tbsp Smoked Paprika
  • 1 tbsp Garlic Powder
  • 2 tbsp Breadcrumbs
  • 2 tbsp Avocado Oil
  • small red onion, sliced
  • small bell pepper, sliced
  • 3 tbsp All Purpose Flour
  • 1 Cup Chicken Stock
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire Sauce

Directions

  1. Add ground turkey to large bowl, along with all the seasonings and breadcrumbs. Combine well with clean hand. Set aside to marinate for at least 20 minutes
  2. Form patties by shaping a golf sized ball and pressing down in the middle. Set aside on a plate until all the patties have been made.
  3. Add oil to large skillet over medium high heat. Once oil is hot, add patties individually and sear for 5 minutes per side. Do not overcrowd pan, do two batches if necessary.
  4. Transfer patties to a rack to drain excess oil.
  5. Add a drizzle of oil if needed then sauté onion for 3 minutes followed by bell pepper. Cook together for an additional 3 minutes
  6. Lower flame and add flour slowly while whisking. Cook flour for 3 minutes.
  7. Pour chicken stock in while whisking continuously. Cook together for 5 minutes.
  8. Add worcestershire sauce and mix well until desired color appears
  9. Add patties individually and baste in sauce, ensure each patty is covered in sauce.
  10. Cook together for 5 minutes then flip and continue to cook for additional 5 minutes.
  11. Serve hot over desired side.

Tips for making the best Smothered Turkey Burgers

  • Don’t overcook your patties, no one likes dry overdone turkey burgers. Keep an eye on your patties and cook for no more than 20 minutes in total. Baste your patties as much as you can.
  • Be generous with your seasoning- you don’t have to use the same seasonings I did, but whatever seasonings you decide on, don’t be shy.
  • Ensure to whisk flour so there aren’t any lumps in your gravy.
  • Cook flour a little before adding chicken stock, nothing is worst than tasting raw flour in your food.
