As we all know, mashed potato is a staple side dish for every holiday dinner. So I do have to warn you, making this Roasted Garlic Mashed Potatoes means you will be responsible for preparing the side dish every holiday! That is Thanksgiving sides and Christmas sides.

Best Potatoes to Make Mashed Potatoes

The best potatoes for mashing is Yukon Potatoes and Russet Potatoes. This is simply because they have the highest amount of starch in them, which results in a creamy and fluffy mashed potato. I personally prefer Yukon Potatoes over Russet Potatoes because of the flavor profile. Yukon potatoes will give a lighter mashed potato in my opinion, and that is what I look for in a perfect mashed potato dish.

Tips On Making The Best Roasted Garlic Mashed Potato

There are many tips and tricks to use when making this Roasted Garlic Mashed Potato Recipe. I can guarantee you that you will not be left disappointed if you do follow these easy tips.

  • Add Salt to Water When Cooking Potatoes- This is one of the most important step to follow when making any kind of mashed potato. A little salt always goes a long way when cooking anything, in this case, a lot of salt goes a long way. This might sound crazy, but it is better to add too much salt than too little to your boiling water when cooking your potatoes. I normally use 2 tsp of salt to every cup of water for my potatoes, but of course you could adjust your salt to water ratio for your potatoes.
  • Ensure Potatoes are Fully Cooked- The cooking time will vary for different size potatoes. Larger potatoes will take a longer time to cook, so be patient. No one wants to eat mashed potato that has hard bits and pieces in it.
  • Cut Potatoes at The Same Size- Cutting your potatoes at the same size ensures an even cook at the same time. It is a not a pleasant feel and taste to be eating potatoes that are not cooked evenly.
  • Add Ingredients While Potatoes are Still Hot- This way your butter will melt all the way and spread right through out the mashed potatoes leaving it silky and creamy.
  • Use Heavy Cream or Half & Half in Mashed Potatoes- This will ensure that your mashed potato is rich, creamy and more flavorful.
  • Use the Right Equipment to mash your potatoes- Using a potato ricer or food mill, or even a potato masher is normally the best tools to make the perfect mashed potato. Choosing the right equipment depends on a number factors, mainly the budget you are working with. Below are a few of each equipment to help you decide.

A Food Mill is has multiple functions other than just mashing potatoes, and is a better option if you plan on making large batches. A food mill can also make smooth purees and can be used a strainer, as well as a straining food processor.
